Field Notes

Field Notes highlights the research, experiments, and technical thinking from the founder of Protoworks, John Taylor. Rather than presenting finished commercial products, this section links directly to John's personal engineering journal at JKTDEV.CO.UK.

With over 20 years of experience in software development—spanning large-scale enterprise systems, embedded software, automation, and practical prototyping—John focuses heavily on software, electronics, PCB design, tools and small hardware building blocks.

At heart, the goal is always to tinker, build, and learn. The notebook captures that process—warts and all—exploring why something that looked simple on paper might misbehave on the workbench, and documenting how it was resolved.

Articles range from polished technical write-ups to informal field notes captured during active projects. This includes designing circuits, testing regulators under load, debugging firmware, and exploring amateur radio.

Some of the concepts and open hardware modules explored on JKTDEV eventually feed into the tools, services, and products offered here at Protoworks. However, the notebook remains an independent, personal space dedicated to documenting the work, the learning, and the thinking behind various software and hardware builds. Client projects and proprietary designs always remain strictly confidential, ensuring that only John's personal research and public prototyping concepts are shared.
